Behind These Green Eyes

by Joel Bryant, Jr.

Imani Book Club Rating: 2.5

Joel Bryant, Jr. gives an autobiographical account of his life as a music entrepreneur.  Bryant tells of a tale hustling his way into the music business using his knowledge of street from the streets of Detroit to build his hip hop business.  He learns life isn’t easy and when it seems you come into your own, someone or something will come to disrupt your being.  Living life under the quote, “Let your enemy be your motivator,” and governing himself by who he aspires to be at the end of the day.  Bryant continued to grow and learn until his empire was realized.

A very quick read.  A minor edit job to tidy up a few sentences.  Some pages leave space and pick up on the next page for example pages 168-169.  These issues would help with the flow of reading.

Some closure was needed with many events that occurred within the biography.  Reading the events of someone’s life as seen through their eyes can leave some questions.  For example, a big question mark for me was what happened with the case concerning his brother’s murder?  Was anyone ever found, solved or convicted?  This seemed to be a big loss in his life, however, he doesn’t give us a conclusion.  What happened to his father?  All these different labels and business ventures he had, what happened to them all?
